Description

The specimen BR 9-40 and smaller Carp Method BR 9-30 reels are an excellent choice for anglers wanting all the advantages of a freespool facility, but on a smaller reel body. The freespool system allows line to be taken by a fish until you engage the rear lever. A design widely used by specimen anglers targeting large carp and barbel, but has also become increasingly popular for general coarse fishing applications. There is also a growing trend for freespool type reels when targeting match-sized carp on commercial fisheries - particularly with bomb and method feeder tactics.

Each model comes with an alloy spool as standard plus a shallower composite spool and a useful set of line identification buttons.

Features

  • Reliable front drag system
  • Freespool lever at rear allows fish to take the line until you disengage mechanism
  • Single, reversible handle
  • Nine ball bearings, including roller bearing
  • Ideal for feeder fishing wherever quality fish are expected
  • Useful spool filling advice on packaging
  • Supplied with a spare composite spool

Specifications

  • Composite spool line capacity - 100m 0.25mm 8lb - 90m 0.28mm 10lb
  • Alloy spool line capacity - 100m 0.28mm 10lb - 90m 0.30mm 12lb
  • Set of rubber line identification marker buttons

Questions and Answers

Q

Would this reel take 12lb line and if so how much? Also is it designed for the drennan series 7 avon rod * Kind regards R

By Ray Moore - Northampton - 5th Jan 2026
A

Hi Ray, thanks for the question. It will take 12lb line but how much would depend on the diameter. I would say around 90-100m approximately. It would be fine on that rod also. Hope this helps. Regards, Tackleuk.

I don't think enough match anglers appreciate the benefits of a freespool reel, but I've been using them for several years now. There particularly good for bomb-and-pellet work or underarming a Method feeder on the pole line. Simply engage the freespool lever and a big fish wont smash you up on the take. Its a much better system than loosening up the rear drag like some people do. Up to recently I was using some old Shimano 4000 DLs but I've now switched over to Drennan Series 7 BR 9-30s and 9-40s. Even if you don't use the freespool mechanism there a solid feeder reel in their own right. There perhaps too cheap for some of the tackle tarts I know but I honestly cannot fault them.
